Ministry of Commerce welcomes surge in gem and jewelry exports, prepares to host trade fair in September as it eyes 20% rise in exports
21 July 2022 – The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce, and the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) are all set for the 67th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF), to be held from 7-11 September at Challenger Halls 1-3, IMPACT Exhibition & Convention Center, Muang Thong Thani. It will be the first full-scale physical trade fair following a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite various economic woes over the past two years, exports of Thai gems and jewelry continued to expand. According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, exports of gems and jewelry (excluding gold) from January to June 2022 amounted to USD 3,884.21 million, an increase of 40.96% from the same period in 2021. Major markets included the United States, India, Hong Kong, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, Japan and Singapore. The top three export products (excluding gold) were diamonds, gold jewelry and silver jewelry, respectively.
For this year, DIPT is ready to push growth of the Thai gem and jewelry industry further by organizing the 67th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair from 7-11 September. To date, over 700 entrepreneurs from both Thailand and overseas have registered for the fair, to present products in upwards of 1,000 booths. Events will also be held in BGJW to attract exhibitioners and buyers from all over the world. These include jewelry exhibitions; “The New Faces,” which showcases works by new entrepreneurs; “The Jewellers,” an exhibition of works by designers taking part in the Designers’ Room and Talent Thai projects, as well as seminars on various topics. BGJF is expected to drive sales of Thai gems and jewelry throughout 2022 up by at least 20%, a target set for this year.
