Bangkok Spotted as Global Nexus for Gem Trading
Bangkok has solidified its position as a pivotal hub for the colored-gem trade in Asia, hosting the majority of gemstone tenders that influence global market sentiment. Approximately 70% of the world's sapphires and 90% of its rubies pass though Thailand, most of which are treated and cut in Chanthaburi, and over the past decade, this segment continues to grow. Government policies supporting industry growth, improved infrastructure, and tax exemptions for rough gems contribute to Bangkok's status as a gem and jewelry hotspot, not only in the region but in the world.
At present, Bangkok is the go-to destination for gems and jewelry professionals like high-profile dealers, jewelers and jewelry experts from global jewelry houses. Multinational companies, including Gemfields and Fura Gems, now choose Bangkok over other locations for their auctions, attributing the city's central location and efficient infrastructure. Thanks to this competitive atmosphere, prices and demands continue to soar.
This is why international buyers need to put Bangkok in their sourcing calendar. Apart from private tenders and auctions, Bangkok is also home to the renowned Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair, a global trade event for gems and jewelry organized biannually by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or GIT. Designed to be a platform to connect Thai gems and jewelry companies to the world, the fair showcases gems and jewelry products ranging from gemstones, diamonds, gold and silver jewelry to tools and equipment from Thai and global companies. This year, the 69th edition of Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is scheduled to take place between 21-25 February 2024 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC).
