“FUTURE NATURAL”
Creating a new breed of budding furniture designers
The charm and the aesthetic value of furniture items are made possible by the creativity and talent of designers. It is their interpretation of different concepts that play a very significant role in the development of the furniture industry.

Efforts are constantly made in the Thai furniture industry to create a new breed of promising designers. The Office of Product Value Development, the Department of Export Promotion, has been actively engaged in the ‘Thai Furniture Designers Development’ project since 2001. The project aims at helping young furniture designers with potential to be able to create unique and distinctive value for their furniture products, which meet, if not exceed, international standards. The project comprises a
two-day lecture and a three-day design workshop. The project also provides opportunities for participants to submit their design work to manufacturers. The selected designs are made into actual product prototypes which are then displayed at leading furniture fairs. |

Product prototypes to be exhibited at the upcoming Thailand International Furniture Fair 2008 are made from the designs created by participants of
Thai Furniture Designers Development project in 2007, which was a part of the Thai-Swedish Joint Plan of Action. Under the theme, ‘FUTURE NATURAL’, the 2007 project featured prominent Swedish furniture designers and marketers Christina Af Klint, Anders Wisth and Gunilla Allard as guest speakers and members of the judging committee. |

The theme of FUTURE NATURAL is a furniture design philosophy which requires participants to combine natural materials and forms with futuristic design concepts. It takes into account the way of life, natural materials and modern technologies, in order to create furniture items that satisfy consumers the world over with eye-catching appearance, quality materials, unique charm and real-life manufacturing practicality. A total of 15-20 product prototypes will be exhibited at the TIFF 2008 event. |

The research program is currently organized by the Office of Overseas Trade Promotion located in Fukuoka, Japan. The program aims to study the furniture needs of up-market consumers in Japan, in order to help Thai furniture makers develop furniture products that consumers are looking for. Through this program, Japanese furniture gurus are also employed to help market Thai furniture products in Japan. Furniture items from this project will be displayed under the exhibition named ‘Hotel Qualia’ at the Tokyo International Furniture Fair 2007 and at
TIFF 2008. Highlights of the exhibition are lifestyle furniture items ideal for modern homes and boutique hotels. Truly a great exhibition not to be missed by hotel designers, home lovers, architects and interior designers. |
